Your Role at Baxter

This position is within the Baxter Global IT organization collaborating with the Vice President of IT Strategy and Transformation. The individual in this position will work continuously with the CIO and IT SLT, regularly with Business Segment and Functional leaders; and periodically with the CEO and SLT. The main responsibility of this position is to lead the establishment, institutionalization, and continuous improvement of the metrics-based performance management system for IT to achieve consistent business outcomes. The position has two major areas of responsibility: IT Governance and IT Investment Portfolio Execution.

What you'll be doing:

IT Governance

  • Define overall IT annual performance metrics system and facilitate monthly management cadence measuring performance to commitments (audience: CIO & IT SLT)
  • Lead IT investment portfolio execution cadence in monthly IT General Management session, including performance to scope, schedule, budget, quality, and value metrics (audience: CIO & IT SLT)
  • Lead quarterly IT Strategy sessions, including continuous improvement activities (audience: CIO & IT SLT)
  • Chair the quarterly IT Performance Review session working with CIO & IT SLT (audience: CEO & SLT).
  • Champion compilation and management of the overall IT Operating Model, knitting together the major IT functions, roles, major processes, and performance metrics of the organization
  • Facilitate compilation and attainment of the IT Annual Operating Plan (AOP) in collaboration with Finance
  • Chair the monthly IT Global Leadership Team session (audience: Director-level and higher IT individuals)
  • Serve as Global IT leader for the corporate Transformation Management Office (TMO) leading both the IT transformation workstream of projects, as well as coordinating IT’s enablement of the Functional workstreams’ transformation projects (audience: CEO & SLT, Operating Committee, CIO & IT SLT)
  • Champion management to commitments for long-term goals and annual refreshes of the overall 5-year IT Strategic Plan (audience CIO & IT SLT)

IT Investment Portfolio Execution

  • Lead the global Portfolio Execution organization consisting of program managers, project managers, and performance analysts, including internal and external personnel, as a unified community achieving consistent value delivery
  • Determine the Portfolio Execution organizational design and personnel sourcing approach, balancing internal and external talent leverage to optimally lead the peaks and valleys of business performance
  • Define IT investment portfolio delivery metrics and targets (scope, schedule, budget, quality, and value) and deploy appropriate management cadences to drive performance to commitments
  • Deploy on-line metrics management standard operating procedures and coaching mechanisms to continually guide the IT community to apply metrics-management techniques to achieve outcomes
  • Establish on-line project and program management execution methodologies (waterfall, hybrid, agile), including methodology selection criteria and incorporation of organizational change management practices to affect high user adoption rates for changes to processes, systems, data, and roles
  • Synthesize and continuously improve investment portfolio management (the process of managing the intake of investment proposals for the IT organization) and portfolio execution management processes in collaboration with IT Investment Portfolio leader, including precise, monthly financial tracking methods
  • Establish continuous training mechanisms for induction of new team members (internal and external) and career development methods to continuously strengthen individual, team, and organizational competencies

Scope Elements

  • Financial Accountability: $90-120 million IT investment portfolio annual spend
  • People Accountability: 50-100 individuals in organization depending on breadth of efforts in portfolio
  • Geographic Accountability: Global scope with individuals in organization in multiple countries and projects/programs spanning all of Baxter’s business regions
  • Portfolio Scope: IT investment projects and programs cover the entirety of Baxter’s operations consisting of all business segments (examples: Healthcare Systems & Technologies, Medical Products & Therapies, and Pharmaceuticals), all business functions (examples: Supply Chain, Commercial, Finance, R&D, HR, Legal, and Service), Mergers, Acquisitions, & Divestitures (MA&D) efforts; and IT functional advancements (examples: cybersecurity, infrastructure, and services)
  • Stakeholder Community: Role interacts continuously with CIO and VP-level IT SLT members, regularly with Business Segment and Function VP-level individuals, periodically with CEO and SLT, and occasionally with Board of Directors individuals.

What you'll bring:

  • Bachelor of Computer Science, Engineering, or related field of study
  • Fifteen years of experience in information technology operations, metrics-based performance governance, standard operating procedures, investment portfolio management, program and project execution, solution delivery, operating models, and organizational design
  • Familiarity with information technology general management practices and metrics, financial management, solution delivery life cycle management, service management, enterprise architecture frameworks, and organizational change management methodologies
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including teamwork, facilitation and negotiation
  • Strong leadership and people management skills
  • Excellent planning, analytical, communication, and organizational skills
  • Solid understanding of the operating climate of large enterprises and how to navigate obstacles to achieve tangible strategic and tactical outcomes

We understand compensation is an important factor as you consider the next step in your career. At Baxter, we are committed to equitable pay for all employees, and we strive to be more transparent with our pay practices. The estimated base salary for this position is $280,000 - $385,000 annually. The estimated range is meant to reflect an anticipated salary range for the position. We may pay more or less than of the anticipated range based upon market data and other factors, all of which are subject to change. Individual pay is based on upon location, skills and expertise, experience, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for discretionary bonuses, commission, and/or long-term incentive.
